Public bus transport
You can arrive by bus from Lisbon and Faro. The bus will take you to Lagos and there you will have to change to the local bus. The local bus schedule shows Salema(X) and Salema. Don't get off at Salema(X) as it is 1,5 Km away, up at the main road.
You can check the bus schedules here www.eva-bus.com and www.rede-expressos.pt.
Train transport
If you take the train from Lisbon, you board at the Oriente station, be aware though, that you have to change train in Tunes. This is the train that comes from Faro. The train ride will take you through some pretty landscape and orange groves. On the train you will be approached by several ladies offering accomodation in Lagos, and they will tell you that nothing is to be found in Salema - that is not true.
The train ride ends in Lagos where you can change to the local bus.

As you can see, the Algarve is not so extensive from east to west, and if you want to do the journey fast, then the motorway A22 takes you from the Spanish border to Lagos.
You can also take the old main road N125, which is closer to the coast line and from this you can easily take detours to the small villages along the coast.
One word of warning: the N125 has lots of traffic, so be careful.
